The most wonderful time of the year is almost here and with it comes the excitement (and sometimes anxiety!) of work Christmas parties. Knowing how to balance this much anticipated event with professionalism and fun is always a daunting thing… but no need to worry, we’re here to guide you through!

In this guide we’ll cover 7 key etiquette rules for you to follow for your upcoming work Christmas party to ensure that everyone has a good time.

1. Make sure you turn up!

While it may seem to be an obvious point to start with, be sure you make the effort to join in with your company’s Christmas festivities. It’s a great opportunity to get to know your colleagues in a fun and relaxed environment and will help to strengthen your relationships in the long run.

The company Christmas party is a nice chance to get into the festive spirit and create new memories with your coworkers which can translate into a positive office environment. So don’t miss out – turn up, spread some festive cheer and have an excellent evening!

2. Dress suitably to the dress code

There’s nothing worse than turning up to a party feeling either underdressed or overdressed! Before attending the event, make sure to get a grasp of any dress codes or themes that have been communicated for the big night.

While it’s a nice chance to show off your style, it’s important to remember that you will be around your colleagues and managers so make sure to choose an outfit that is both festive and appropriate. This way you’ll feel more comfortable, confident and ready to take on the evening!

3. Drink in moderation

Congratulations, your team have worked hard all year and deserve a chance to celebrate! Your work Christmas party is an incredible chance to relax and celebrate all your achievements with your colleagues. So why not have a few drinks, dance the night away and enjoy getting to know your colleagues outside of an office environment.

However – to put it quite bluntly – make sure not to have too much to drink! While your Christmas party is in a casual setting and everyone is there to have fun, be mindful of how many drinks you are having – it can be very easy to get carried away.

Remember, you’ll have to make it to work on Monday morning, so make sure you drink in moderation and behave appropriately to avoid the dreaded hangxiety!

4. Mingle with everyone

Christmas parties serve as a fantastic opportunity to interact with people that you may not get the chance to regularly speak with.

Although a potentially daunting task, be sure to go and introduce yourself to colleagues you may not know. It makes a complete difference and can help improve communication and relationships throughout the company.

5. Try not to talk about work

Although the topic of work may seem unavoidable at a Christmas party, try to steer away from business related conversations. This party gives you the chance to relax and enjoy the company of your colleagues without the woes and worries of the working year ahead.

There’s always a time and place to discuss your professional concerns, however at a Christmas party, everyone is there to have a good time and enjoy the festive cheer!

Instead of diving into business talk, why not take some time to ask your colleagues about themselves – for example their background, family or hobbies.

6. Be inclusive and mindful

Being inclusive and mindful of all members of staff are important things to consider. Here are a few things you may need to think about:

  • Some people may not drink alcohol – make sure there are non-alcoholic options available so everyone can feel involved and enjoy the Christmas festivities
  • Make sure new staff are involved! Attending your first work event can be very intimidating so make sure to include newbies and make them feel welcome in the team
  • Include any dietary requirements on the food menu so everyone can have a bite to eat (veggies, GF, DF etc.)

7. Thank the organisers of the event

Organising a Christmas party can be a time-consuming and stressful task that can take months to plan! As a participant, it can be easy to turn a blind eye to all the planning it takes to pull an event together.

Make sure to take some time to thank the people involved and tell them how much you enjoyed and appreciate the event. It will go a long way!
